Opposite: Dr. Matilda Evans's Pond at Lindenwood Park, ca. 1926. There were no public recreational facilities for blacks in Columbia in the 1920s. During the summer of 1926 Dr. Evans announced the opening of Lindenwood Park on property she owned. The Lindenwood complex featured a swimming pond, dance hall, and the Blue Bird T Room. "Come out Swim, Dance, Eat and Enjoy the Cool Breezes," read an ad in the Palmetto Leader on 17 July 1926.
