Hôtel Chappe

Dear Mother,

We arrived at this cosy little hotel yesterday evening after having driven in from Boulogne. We had spent the night outside London, driven to Dover in time for the 12:30 ferry, and arrived at about 2 in France. We picked up a hitch hiker and took him to Paris -- a young Dubliner just entering the university to study study French, who is hitchhiking around for 3 weeks here. At Paris we got a bit lost but finally arrived & had a late dinner. The car is garaged, perhaps for the duration. Now we have many errands to run, to customs officials chiefly (the car registration runs out, & numerous possibilities are open, perhaps very involved), and also to tax officials: a Frenchman told us he paid no U.S. income tax while working
