We the undersigned certify and are willing to do so on oath that on the seventeenth day of January AD one thousand eight hundred and sixty six at the residence of R.S. Calvert Esq in the county and state aforesaid we heard Cyrus a freedman but formerly a slave belonging to the said R.S. Calvert, voluntarily acknowledge, that at some time during the summer or fall of 1865 (time not mentioned) [[strikethrough]] that [[//strikethrough]] he made an expressed oral contract to remain on the plantation of the said R.S. Calvert, on the same conditions as he had previously done when a slave, viz:  The said R.S. Calvert to furnish, board, Lodging, clothing, and pay all Doctor's bills, and this at the time when the said R.S. Calvert told all the freedmen on the plantation (formerly his slaves) that they were now free and could go and do whatever they pleased, or remain on the plantation and do as they had done while slaves, and on the same conditions until Christmas (1865) and we further certify that the said Cyrus, freedman, left the premises of the said R.S. Calvert during the month of October and has done no work on the farm since that time.
