the use of three barrels corn & twenty four bushel sweet potatoes & two & half gallons molasses & Since he has got this order against me I have tried to settle with him several times & he will not allow me anything for what he has of the [[?]] potatoes. [[??]] Hopper Mark H. James Deposeth as follows: I was at work with Mr. Hopper the first of June 1865. I heard him read the order of Gen Schofield to James and all is negroes and set them free on the 3rd day of June 1865 and Mr. Hopper told them they could hunt them new homes if they saw proper or stay with him ,either, but if they remained with him he would not give them anything for their labor but their victuals truck potatoes [[?]] and nothing more, but told them he rather they would get houses at other places. On Monday following they took their freedom of [[??]] and feeding themselves Tuesday went to the union meeting in Mt. Airy, North Carolina and Wednesday came back and begged him to [[??]] in at his offer which he did and they worked on until sometime in July. Lucken, an acting Justice of the Peace, in and for said County do hereby certify that the foregoing affidavit [[??]] over and subscribed to his due for an before me on this day and date and that the said P.F.
