To Col. John R. Edie, Brevet Col. U.S.A. Sup't Dist. of West N.C:

Peter G. Graham, a free man of color, of the aforesaid county and state, by his petition, respectfully showeth unto you, that he resides in the town of Greensboro, in said state and has for many years past; that he is a barber by trade and has an interest in real estate in said town; that his said business yields him enough to support himself and have a handsome income besides for one in his situation in life; that on the 17th of Jan'y 1864, one Jane Albright, then a slave, now a free woman, gave birth to a child, which she, then and hundreds of times since, charged to be the child of your petitioner; that he is satisfied it is his child and has always acknowledged himself to be its father; that he never sought the keeping of the child, Fannie aforesaid, nor did he ever deprive her of it by force; that when said Fannie was about one year and a half old, the said Jane, the mother, came to your petitioner and asked him to take her and keep her, as she herself had to labor in families and could not well take care of her; that your petitioner had prior to this helped board and clothe &c said Jane and the said Fannie; that your petitioner loves and then loved his said child Fannie and was quite willing to take her and board, clothe, educate and raise her; that he kept her in his premises and put her in the charge of his own mother and sisters, who are fond of her and have taken unusual care of her; that she
