State of North Carolina
County of Grandell

I certify and am willing to do so on oath that sometime during the summer of 1865 (exact date not remembered) I was witness to an oral contract between R. J. Colvert Esq. and Cyan, belson & Reuben, freedmen, but formerly slaves belonging to the said R.J. Colvert all of this county and state [[?]] to the following effect viz:
That the said R.J. Colvert told the said Cyan, belson & Reuben that he was unable to pay them more than their clothing, board, lodging, and Doctor's bills and if they demanded more they must go somewhere else to get it, that the said freedmen, excepting Reuben remained on the farm of the said R. J. Colvert on these conditions until about the 1st of Oct. when they left this premises and have done no more on the farm since that time.
