To Col Eddie Commander of Post Salisbury N.C.
The Petition of the undersigned respectfully showith that sometime during the war a man named Fitzgerald bought in the town of Danville Va a negro woman named Dinah and her child Martha, which woman and child he afterwards sold to Doit McGuire of this county, who subsequently sold the woman to Thos Cooper retaining the child after the surrender and the consequent emancipation of slavery the woman obtained possession and control of her child. In the month of January 1866. the woman with her child came into the family of the undersigned as a hired servant and continued in that relation until she sickened and died about the month of August following. When she was about to die the wife of the undersigned asked her what disposition she wished made of the child, she promptly replied requesting my wife to keep the child and raise her which my wife promised to do. It is proper here to mention that neither the woman or child had then or now have any blood relation [[strikethrough]] or any org [[/strikethrough]] to take or care for the child.
