Holtsburg April 8th 1866

This is to certify that Samuel McDonald, Rufus Ellis and George Ellis are now working Land enough not only to support their families but with an average crop year, to make an excess which can be sold and applied to the cost of cultivating their crop. They are all three of excellent character, and their efforts at crop preparation [[strikethrough]] growing [[/strikethrough]] so far are far beyond any freedmen I have seen. Their ground was well prepared, corn now planted, and will plant cotton as soon as the time arrives. I should not hesitate to credit them for any amount they are able to pay.
