St. Charles
July 31st 65

Col. O. Brown,

[[Kind?]] Sir,

As I am desirous of obtaining a situation in the Gov't Employ, I take the liberty of writing you these few lines,

I would like to know if there are any Vacancies in your "Department" and if so, how I might obtain one.

I should prefer taking charge of a [[underlined]]School[[/underlined]], among the "Freedmen" or "Refugees" (if there are any such situations) as I have taught School.

Transcription Notes:
The date at the top of the page looks like it says 63, but that doesn't make sense with my understanding of the dates that the Freedmen's Bureau existed. Does it look like that 3 might be an 8?
