Dear Colonel.
I am happy to inform you that our Mission Board, & the "American Missionary Association" have a prospect of obtaining Rev. C.O. Libby of Candia N.H. as my successor in the general missionary & school work at Ft. Monroe.

I tell you Col. upon my honor, he is one of the very best men, in every way, for that place. I known him intimately, for he used to be a Maine main - For talent, energy, discretion, common sense, business experience & success in whatever he undertakes - I do no know his superior in all the clergymen of my acquaintence - If they succeed in obtaining his services. I hope you will give him the appointment you so kindly offered me - I know he will be a great help to your work! His heart & intellect are both right - He is a business man, & you can rely upon him to do any thing you want done, provided any man can do it.

My health is still very poor & my physicians say I must [[?]] by, some months yet.

Yours &c
E. Knowlton
