Rev. R. M. Manly
Richmond, Va

Very dear Sir,

Your favor of the 20th was rec'd a day or two ago. We have since seen Bro. Coan, and shall send him to make a survey of the Shenandoah Valley.

The Sec. of the N. F. R. Asso has conferred with me in regard to supplies at R. Just before that Prof Woodbury brought me a letter from you, and we agreed to allow the Presbyterians to fill the place we were called upon to occupy.

I trust you will understand our position. We do not wish to scramble for places. There is work enough to be done; and we are willing to work where others are not pushing in. We knew there would be a scramble for places at Richmond, but we resolved not to show in it.
