Reports his journey to Clarksville

Petersburg Oct. 5. 1865

Dear Friend, 
I returned from Clarksville last evening and found your letter awaiting me - also - others and received the first news from home - had since I left. In regard to what I wrote I said I did not expect District  No. 1. would be given to our society, but thought I might be appointed supt. to act for all the societies - I think that arrangement might have been made, but it may be too late now. I go to Norfolk tomorrow - should have you to day but Mr. Longley wanted me to stay. Many thanks for your interest and kind regards - I wish I could see you. I had most a mind to go to R- tonight and go from there to Norfolk - I had a good deal to say that I will not write - now at least. Mr L says that people of the 2d P. Church have backed down from their argument about warning and caring for the church. If so I do not know as I am under any obligation to do a thing for them. The conditions were understood very plainly and I was to get teachers there provided I couldn't get board men - reasonably - which I did not succeed in doing. I wish I could
