Col O. Brown

Dear Friend

Our various correspondents to whom the boxes of books were shipped near two months ago (and for which I hold rects per Bureau &c Richmond &c) write me that none of the boxes have come to hand. The contents are very costly and valuable and are badly wanted. Do please ascertain from the Philada & Richd Steam Packer Co, & from the Danville Co what has become of them. If there is any thing can be done to forward them to their destination have it done at our expense. The delay is terribly vexatious: and unless the responsible parties have the goods forthcoming soon, measures must be instituted for redress. By R. M. Manly's letter dated at the Bureau 14 ult it wd seem that the Danville Co had actually taken the goods into their custody. The rect of the other company also indicates the same. We have been shipping through A. Y. Stokes Richmond; lately.

Please to say whether it is contrary to the order of the Department to use up our stock of books (such as we used at Yorktown Norfolk &c) for our Schools at Danville
