I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of Oct 31st to day and in reply to your inquiries state that I believe Genl Curtis offered to place all schools of this city in hands of civil authorities giving them $1500.00 with request that he hoped it would be equally devoted to both freedmen and white schools.

Not having been consulted on the matter I would say that neither military nor civil authorities have anything to do with our schools practically or nominally.

Their action has been simply on paper and will when they have assumed Official shape be, of course submitted to my superior Officer. Mr Shoemakers office is not vacated. Under my orders he is energetically
