Dear Brother Manly: 
I don't know but what you have begun to think by this time that I have forgotten my promise to write you, but I have not, I have been waiting for a few leisure moments, which I have at last found. 

I found kind (colored) friends to welcome me on my arrival at this devastated place, they promised to do every thing for me, that lay in their power, to make it comfortable and pleasant for me, and they have fulfilled their promise.
