Rev R. M. Manly

Dear Sir
I have written at the request of the Tea Committee to Gen Howard to keep us out of the Richmond difficulty so far as regards officer quarters. Please see Gen O. Brown for my sake to do what he can and to aid you in every way in his power which I know he will do without asking

I do hope you will consent to take the entire superintending of all freedmens schools in Richmond including the Normal school which the central commissioner will establish. Chase had got matters in a [[?]] — But having the lot we can work out of that. I suppose you got the plans, or copies. Chase & I arranged them Modify & improve as you deem best.

You understand by my last note to you & by the letter that Mr Woolsey has this day been directed to write you that you are officially instructed to take claim of the removal of the building — & the fitting of it up. I hope I may see you soon or Mr Chase (N.B.) [[?]] in Richmond.

Truly yours
Wm Geo Hawkins
