Maj Gen: O. O. Howard
Commissioner of Freedmen Bureau
Washington D.C.

Dear Sir
The Teachers Committee desire me to say that they had not been informed until recently of the conditions, upon they were to receive and remove the Winder Building.

We had supposed that this matter would have been fully attended to by Mr. C. Thurston Chase. I refer to the providing of quarters for the officers of the Bureau remaining in that Building — We understand that two offices were used by them. Mr Chase has been taken suddenly ill & we have no knowledge of the plans made by him to accommodate your officers. Mr Manly has been directed to act in his absence — We write to ask your aid, in making through Gen. Brown [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] or some other officer in Richmond, the provision you need or if you cannot do this, to give us as many days grace as you can, until we can hear from Mr Chase.

respectfully yours
Wm Geo Hawkins
