Rev. Mr. Manly;

Dear Sir,
We take the liberty of addressing you, knowing that you are interested in the freedman and their friends. Our situation here is very unpleasant, as we are in daily fear some open demonstration on the part of the citizens. The family with whom we board are continually harassed, — have been warned to "rid themselves of us as soon as possible." There is a meeting today of the citizens to see what course shall be taken to deprive us of the school-house.

We are insulted on the street, and remarks like these are publicly made — they "have
