JOHN H. SEMMES,
PROPRIETOR.

SEATON HOUSE,
Louisiana Avenue, between Sixth and Seventh Streets.
Washington, D. C. June 22nd 1866

R. M. Manly

Dear Sir
The examination of the freedmen's schools in this city is going on today. I remain to allow them; am also looking after matters connected with the work in our state for the coming year.

Gen. O.O. Howard is absent from the city; expected back to day.

Shall work my way back to Richmond as soon as consistent with the duties which arise requiring my attention. I want to finish up as I go along so as not to have to travel over the same ground again. Please inform Mr Chapin. I would return immediately if I suppose I should be of any service to him but he informed me in N.Y. that he should not need me in Richmond.

Ty yrs
