Rev. Geo. Whipple

Dr Sir -
I thank you for your favor of yesterday. I think our understanding of the Richmond affair is Substantially the same. But your closing remark demands some explanations. As my proposition was to secure Mr. Washburn against loss to the 1st of July. and Gen Brown asked that he be fully restored which would have given him a claim upon us to Oct 1st - which I could not promise. And as I had already materially qualified the charges against Mr Washburn and he demanded a withdrawal of the letter as a whole which I could not do. I was compelled to throw the whole matter back upon the committee and so our of my personal control - this I stated at the time.
