New England Branch Freedman's and Union Commission. No. 8 Studio Building, Boston, July 24th 1866. Rev R.H. Hanley. Richmond. My Dear Sir. I thank you for your favor of the 20th. We must buy what lumber is needed, which the "Barracks" will not furnish. We have no definite plans or designs for fitting up our buildings, nor can we make any at so great distance ourselves. I know of but one way to reach the case and that is to depend on you for plans and estimates. Will you not look over the buildings. Estimate the amount of flooring-partitions-roofing, doors et cetera that will be needed, with probable cost and let us know. We can then give definite instructions. I think the barrack lumber must answer for floors, outhouses et cetera, but joists, posts partitions, windowframes et cetera must be
