LYMAN ABBOTT, Gen. Sec. J. M. McKIM, Cor. Sec.

New York, Oct. 8th. 1866

Dear Mr. Manly:- I have just handed your application for books, which was approved by the Teacher's Committee today, to Mr. Estes, who will send them by express. We ordered Parker & Watson's for the rather - to me - unsatisfactory reason, that they had been largely used in Richmond, and would be in the hands of many of our pupils. Miss Jones is the youngest teacher that we have sent you, but she taught the freed children last winter. Miss Jones is a lady of talent, but, I think, has little experience as a "schoolma'am". Miss Rowell stands well on our list. Miss Zelma Rinne is very highly recommended. The Miss Cooke you know better than I.
Am very sorry to learn
