the northeast slope of the
Sierra Malinche which attains
an alt. of 13,xxx [[13,000]] ft.
a few miles away. The soil is
very sandy. Grain is sown
very thin & corn hills far
apart.

We left Huamantla at 6:15 -
this morning on horseback
with a guide intending to
go up to the cañon [[canyon]] which
[[?]] comes from near the
summit on the side facing
Huamantla. We soon found
our guide knew nothing what
even about the trails on the
Mt. Ar [[Apr.]] 8 [[?]] we reached

a rancho where I left my
blankets as I intended to
make a two nights [[night's]] stay at
this place and trap. We rode
up through young pine
until about 10 o’ clock a
few firs had appeared & as
there was plenty of large
grass & [[?]] signals I
set my traps while Ms. N.
& the guide waited. It had
been cloudy all morning
& the fog shut in more &
more as we ascended it
came to meet [[?]] & at
10 A.M. we could only see a
few yards. I set about 70
traps in about 1 1/2 hours &
