to clothe & feed. They receive no aid from the whites here. This winter has been unusually hard & it has been a hard struggle with most of them. But in the face of these obsticles, they saved their scanty earnings, bought a lot & sufficient timber to build a common log school house which they built themselves. They now are ready to add $300 to any aid the Gov. may be Knowing their circumstances, I think I can truthfully say they they have done more for themselves that any Community of their kind in the state. [[strikethrough]] Furthef [[/strikethrough]] Furthermore, I have been here now over two months, and as yet as far as I can judge their interest has not diminished a particle. Their gratituded for the teachers sent, seems unbounded & they will stand by us I'm sure manfully. I enrolled the scholars for the night school last week, and although they have waited patiently for two months for this enrollment, their numbers encreased weekly & last week I enrolled 70 scholars to be taught nights. Their ages ranging from 18 to 60 yrs.  From these facts I am led to believe [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] they will prove an exception to the above rule. In regard to the extent of our work, let me say we do not design, in erecting a large building, to meet the wants of any other Comm. but Abingdon & its immediate vicinity: & the present house does not begin to do this
