The Bearer, Mrs Sarah A Tiffey, is a widow, & in very needy circumstances. She is a native of Vermont, but has resided for many years in Virginia, though only for the last year in this city, during which time she has been an esteemed member of the Congregation under my charge. She has tried, in various ways, to secure a maintenance for herself & daughters. The use of her needle, however, has proved a precarious & insufficient means of support; & it is, I think providential, that she now looks to teaching to procure a living. This occupation is her "specialty" - She is certainly very competent; & I am sure, will faithfully instruct any children that may be committed to her care, either in the primary or the more advanced departments.

I know Mrs Tiffey very well, she is entirely destitute, She earns a scanty subsistence for herself and daughters by sewing. But it takes almost all she can make to pay her house rent, She is very well educated, and was formerly, for many years, engaged in teaching. If worth and want constitute a claim for assistance, she has a very strong claim
