Sir
The undersigned citizens of Rippon Hale York Co Va. hereby make application in behalf of the colored people of this place & vicinity - for such lumber new or second hand as may be in your power to furnish. The present log building is entirely inadequate for the accommodation of the present number of pupils - the room being but 18 x 22. There are more than 100 pupils now in attendance upon the schools Day, night & Sunday. There are no desks, for pupils learning to write & other furniture is much needed.

The proprietors of this estate are favorable to the school & have render efficient aid & will give the use of the land free of rent. Gen Armstrong who has inspected the school, suggest that one of the Hospital Building at Hampton, transported here would furnish the requisite materials. Some aid from the Bureau would be needed in the erection of the Building
