The representation that the Freedmen desired a Methodist rather than a Presbyterian Church is not correct: the truth is that, being Baptist, they desire neither as such, but are willing to take either for the sake of having a school & preaching. Mr. Scott, the teacher, told me that the F'men were very much opposed to him - and presume, it is said, they were opposed to me - not being a Baptist. I could have organized a Ch. & taken in the whole crowd and they would not have know the difference if I had not told them that I am a Presb. But I wd. not mislead them and was waiting only for them to be sure of me among themselves - as I did at the Freedmen's Chapel when I have such a Ch. & 147 members and one of the largest & best schools in
