intelligent effort to bear on it. Such aid has been offered. But to secure this, it is necessary to have the school houses and schools wholly under control of the above Society. This will not be, if colored Church Societies contribute to the building of the houses: for they will insist, by virtue of any interest they may have, on a large control, and on making the school subordinate to the church; and I fear at least a partial failure as the result.

There would be an average of fifty scholars to each school, and the average expense of each building completed is estimated at $500.00

The importance of this field has been repeatedly reported. The school work there now amounts to very little. An established population of not less than 13,000 souls, thickly settled and quite accessible, craves opportunities for education. It is submitted, whether
