five miles, twenty two-six miles, eighteen making a total of one hundred & ninety-eight, within six miles of the place, between those ages. The town is distant from Christiansburg nine miles, and numbers about five hundred in population. The colored people here have a lot offered them free of charge, and propose to build a church and school house when it, during the coming autumn. They are now making efforts to secure a portion of the funds from the citizens of the place, who seem dispoint to assist them in the enterprise. If a locker could be secured for this station by the 1st of October, I could readily send a room in which to organize a school. that would answer the purpose until the church and school house could be completed. Please give this also your special consideration the last place to which I would call your attention, is Pearisburg the county seat of Giles County, and although not so thickly settled with freed people, as the other towns referred to, yet a school membering from fifty to seventy scholars could be gathered. As this place a room could be rented for this purpose and with the present spirit manifested among the freedmen to because for their children an education, it would not be long before they would have a building of their own- provided they received proper encouragement. all of which is respectfully submitted
