Staunton Oct. 18 1867

Reverend R.M. Manly
Richmond

Sir
Mrs. Rowell arrived safely at Staunton but I have had great difficulty in finding a boarding place and at last had issued part of a house recoopered by a colored man's wife. I am smirked at, embarrassed in the matter and this lady in question was the reason I asked so earnestly for a gentleman. Do send Mrs. A. an assistant and companion as soon as possible. You will relieve one immensely for, although far from glory I am not old enough to have a solitary end.

Transcription Notes:
The author was very incoherent in his speech, and some alterations had to be added to create clarity. I cannot decipher the last bit at the end of the page, though.
