offered. Mr. Davis called on me on his return to the city, full of zeal to raise money to build school houses in Va, that he might receive the aid rendered by the Freedmen's Bureau for this purpose. I then told him he was not commissioned for this purpose & advised him to resume his studies in the university which he has done. This is a good work, one that has our hearty indorsement, but our Home Mission committee does not engage in it. There are other organizations engaged in this work & we bid them Godspeed. We hope you may be successful in the noble work of providing means for the instruction of the ignorant & the degraded.

Yours with great esteem,
