Major

The Freedmen of Madison County have for some time past, been endeavoring to organize a school. They now inform me through their spokesman, that seventy (70) scholars are prepared to attend [[auce?]] also, that they have rented a building and propose to put in seats, this week. They wish to commence the session on 1st of June 1868. I therefore, respectfully ask whether they can be furnished a teacher or be obliged to hire one themselves, and if the latter. What amount of funds, assistance, &c. if any, can be allowed a school of said size, also, the proper course for me to pursue to obtain said funds.
