Mr R. M. Manly
Dear Sir My letter to gen Brown in May last relative to the tuition of the coloured people, was refered to you for reply.
In which you stated, the Bureau was not authorised at that time to employ teachers or furnish Books.
Your note stated the only assistance the government had authorised was in providing schoolhouses & furniture. I obtained a house on the first of June last of a genuine citizen of the County, have taught 6 months. I have only been absent 2 days.
Those under my charg have progressed for beyond my anticipations, have given entire satisfaction. There are a large number of children whose parents are not able to send them to school. They are anxious that I shall continue my school, we understand that the house rent of some teachers in the County are paid by the government and if so, we would like to get the rent for 6 months past he intends buildin a good school house if he can get paid for it. You will please state if he can be paid, too whom he should apply also if Books will be furnished or any remuneration to the teacher
