I received my Commission as teacher of Freedmen from the New England Branch & Studio Building Boston, Mass in the last week in October 1867. I came on to Piedmont on the application of Mrs. I. Shacklett she being  willing to Board and lodge a teacher in her house, as the coloured people were very anxious to get a teacher for their children. I found after having seen the people that they would never get a school unless assistance was given them. the most they can do is to pay among them for the price of land to build a School House on and to
