Dear Sir.

I have made every effort to induce the Freedmen to do their share of the school work. My last attempt was to get them to put enough corn or money in Bank to insure the payment of a Teacher. All has failed & I now believe it wise to wait & let them see the opportunity they have lost. I have written home to get authority from Mr Barnes & others who gave the Books to send such as cannot be distributed here to a few who will learn at Home. to some point where there is immediate use for them. Will you please write whether you have a place where they can be used immediately to advantage. I am more sorry than I can tell that the work has failed but there is no hope except from all help coming from outside. I have my fears that many delegate to the convention has used his powerful influence indirectly against this work but certainly hope not.

Respectfully
