Lawrenceville, Brunswick Co. Va.
January 25th 1868

Rev. R.M. Manly
Superintendent of Education
Richmond Va.

Dear Sir,
Your letter of the 28th inst is just arrived together with the copies of the "Vanguard of Freedom" for which please accept out thanks

I had written to Mr. Newton of Washington instituting inquiries respecting the workings of the Society with a view to establishing a similar organization among the members of our schools at this place, and received therefrom instructions pamphlets &c. It is my intention to effect this organization at the earliest practicable moment.

Public sentiment is decidedly in opposition to any innovation as they, both colored & white regard the temperance movement and consequent by my efforts must be nearly or quite single-handed as it regards the citizens here.

School matters are encouraging and our pupils seem deeply interested in acquiring a knowledge of the elementary branches.

I am, Dear Sir.
Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servt
A.C. Burbank
