Bureau Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands
Head Quarters 3d Div 11th Sub Dist Va
Boydton Va Jan 25th/68

Rev R.M. Manly,

Dear Sir,
While in Richmond attending our Convention of the 18th I learned you were Supt. of Schools, from Brother H Washburn, and I also met you in that convention, but was not favored by your acquaintance, not withstanding the fact that we are not acquainted, I hope you may be able to help me in furnishing teachers for two schools in my Division. (Mecklenburg County Va).
The same day I met you first in Convention, I was appointed by Genl Brown (Asst Comm Bureau RF and AL) an Asst Sub Asst Comm of this (Mecklenburg) Co. I reached Boydton the County seat of Mecklenburg on the 17th & after taking possession of my office upon inquiring found that there is about twenty five hundred Colored voters in this county, a large majority of them the heads of families and yet not a single school of any description for the freedmen in the County.
