In answer to your letter of the 28th inst, I have the honor to state that there is a school in this town numbering between thirty (30) and forty (40) scholars. Taught by a young lady from the North, it has been in operation now about ten (10) days, and is at present held in a private residence; It is supported by no society, and the parents of the children are too poor to pay tuition fees, however small,
We have had school here but some six (6) or eight (8) months in all since the surrender, and the children are lamentably ignorant; but very anxious to learn—
The lady we have engaged is a Christian woman, and a graduate of Mt Holyoke, in every way qualified
