+ arithmetic + writing reported in some of the primary schools. I have no doubt that all the pupils are exercised orally in the former studies + write on slates, but we want all such exercises reported, as otherwise the reports do not do justice either to the schools or their teacher.

I will lay your report before the Teachers' Committee on Monday – I am [[strikethrough]] much [[strikethrough]] sure they will be much gratified with it – the amount collected from the scholars does great credit of everybody concerned! Since you are so successful in raising money for the schools in Richimond, can you not give us a little advice as too Petersburg? our schools in that city are not even supplied with fuel by the pupils, who, on the contrary, even go so far as to steal what we supply. I wish you could go over there someday + have a talk with Mrs. [[?]], our Superintendant + devise some means of changing matters there. I assume that you have not already done, but may be mistaken in this – if so, please do excuse me.
