Shiloh Mac 13th 1868

Chaplain Manley

Dear Sir

The bearer Wm H Wade has been living with a white woman without marriage for three years, and wishes to be married if there is any way that he can do so; and as I don't understand the law I send him to you for advice

The husband of the woman was shot by the rebels for desertion, and this man took care of her, and her children, when all the whites deserted her, on account of her husbands loyalty. From this, love for each other arose and they concluded to take each the other for life. Now the Secessionists threaten to imprison him.

Yours Truly
Phineas C Colver
