Sir Your letter of the 19th inst to Mr Alvord criticising so severely the project on foot to purchase suitable grounds & Buildings by the colored people of the United States as a permanent homestead at the National Capital for Gen. O. O. Howard has been referred to me by Mr Alvord, and I assure you sir that my only object in droping you this line is to inform you that the Reverend J. W. Alvord is in no-wise responsible for the origination of the foolish Project refered to. At my request he only handed me a list of the Superintendents of Schools.
