Dear Sir. Charlotte Ct. H. Va July 9th 1868-
I sent you an account of my school for the freedmen more than 2 months ago by Col T. J. Spencer comr. Merchant, but he said he could not find you & failed to bring the money you promised to aid me in this business. Please pay what you think is right either to him or Mr Wm B. Davidson. My school has been in operation 3 months & expect to teach 5. On account of the pressure for labours in the field my school is not as large as the parents promised, but I keep a sunday school for those who do not come in the week. Also I have aided in organizing another about 4 miles distant taught by colored people. The children learn well & are easily governed; but the bulk of them cannot attend school upon any terms. We are here upon the borders of starvation, & they are not able to pay what they owe me for last years services. I hope from what you said you can send thirty dollars, but you know best.
Respectfully yours et cetera
