Charlotte Ct H VA July 25. /68-

Dear Sir -
Though discouraged & surprised by your letter of the 9th inst. I will write once more. I reduced the price of tuition in dependence on your promise or pledge as I understood it, & of course will lose in money as well as time & trouble. I suppose you have forgotten that you wrote to me the second time about Christmas I think stating that the rental would be 5 or 6 dollars a month. On the faith of that I proceeded, & sent a full account of my school by Col. T.J. Spencer Corn Merchant 3 months ago; but he informed me you were out of town when he called, & he had not time to call again. I therefore requested Mr Davidson to see to it - But as I am still teaching perhaps you can pay something for present service. My school this year is small, not exceeding 15 scholars, & they are not very punctual on account of the press of labour in the fields & aboard to get board; for they are in a suffering condition, & I have to aid some of them to live. On account of these things I think you will do what you can to relieve me.
Very respectfully yours I am
Matth. W. Jackson

P.S. Spencer & Davidson will be up to our count in a few days, I will bring any communication which you may see cause to make -
