Monday the 27th of July 1868
Dear Sir
I met the Freedmen at old Providence church near Fancy Grove in this county (Bedford Va) and organised a Sunday school numbering young & old 72 (seventy two) persons but we are without suitable books & teachers to begin with. They are verry egar to learn and there are but few that know the letters of the alphabet and are without means to purchase the cards & books to make a start They have apointed Washington Hall coloured the bearrer of This to wait on you and we hope you will furnish him for them one large card of the letters of the alphabet so that we may place it up & all to learn at one time. Then we want about 75 U. S. Primmers which at catalogue price would be 5 (five) cents each and a few that are priced at 20 cents each the Primmers mentioned are put up by the American Tract Society but as begars should not be choosers we ask for any we can get.
This school was formed yesterday evening during the continued rain they continued to come and after we started home met and added seven names to the list. We think in two or three weeks it will number probably 150.
Blessed is the man that considereth the poor the Lord will deliver him in time of Trouble.
Respectfully Submitted
