| | | | | correct the evils at Chattanooga will write your Mr. Fernald to visit me today and every reasonable thing will be done for you. I yesterday afternoon was present at the examination of a Colored School in charge of one of your teachers Mr. Hubbard I think. I was delighted beyond measure, at the efficiency exhibited by both teacher & scholars. The examination would have done credit to any school in the country. The spelling, reading, arithmetic , geography, declamation and singing gave evidence of earnest work. I am hardly established in my new duties, but I already see the coming of much labor. Five hundred thousand blacks and whites are looking to this Bureau in my District for care protection and guidance. "Who is sufficient for these things." I shall be pleased to hear from you often & to see yourself, agents or representatives of my Head Quarters always. Signed Clinton B. Fiske Brig Genl. & Asst Com |

| | Howards O.O. | Maj Genl. | Washington D.C. | June 30th '65 General I find the work of previewing lists of abandoned and confiscated lands, more difficult than at first supposed. The Treasury Agents whose duty it has been heretofore, to look after and care for this class of property, I find have almost entirely neglected to do so; their attention having been given to the weightier matters of cotton and Trade Regulations. I have agents at work in Tennessee and Alabama (northern) obtaining descriptions of such property as our Camps are now located upon, or near to them. These lists will soon be forwarded and I will still prosecute the work, although nearby parcel is now being claimed and occupied too by the Returning Repentants. I have received your communication of the 26th inst. calling for statistics of Teachers and will proceed at once to gather the items. Signed Clinton B. Fisk B.G. & A.C. |
