Your letter relating to the employment of Mr. Thornton has been read. In reply thereto I have to say that only one teacher, as a rule, will be paid by Agency of the Bureau. Mr. Clark has been by Supt. of Edu. recommended for support, his wife has not. The State Authorities should aid you in regard to sustaining an assistant.

Your communication of the 1st instant, requesting authority to complete certain repairs authorized by Genl. Carlin is received. In reply thereto, I am directed by Bvt. Lieut. Col. James Thompson, U.S.A., Asst. Commr., to inform you that your request is approved. You are authorized to complete the repairs at the places and for the amounts named, viz: at New Providence, one hundred dollars, and at Tait's Station, fifty dollars.
On completion of the work you will please forward vouchers for the same, with Sub vouchers attached to this office.
