Dear General:
I have received your letter of the 2nd inst, inquiring if Maj. Thompson had arrived, had been assigned to the educational work &. In reply I have to say that he did arrive about the 12th of May by Special Order No. 56, a copy of which was forwarded to you. The monthly report for April was signed by Maj. T., and an application was forwarded by for aid to the Methodist Central Tenn. College at this place. Soon after his arrival here called to see Genl. Eaton to arrange a plan of cooperative, but he (Genl. E.) was absent at Chicago. Maj. T. will call again to day and if any practical plan can be agreed upon I will inform you. The schools have prospered finely and will continue to do so under Bureau aid and control. Some have closed up and the majority will do so during the next two or three months.
Maj. Thompson will do very well in the position. The Bureau works harmoniously in all Departments here.
Truly yours
W.P. Carlin
