Dear Sir,

I rec'd a letter a few days ago from our Sec. stating, that in consequence of scarcity of funds - owing probably, to political excitement, in a great measure - the school at the "Big Oak" would have to be suspended for the present unless the Freedmen can sustain it.
This I know they cannot do, for I have tried, without success, for two years and a half to bring them up to a self sustaining condition, in part at least.
They have not the means.
