R.M. Manly, Esq.

Dear Sir,

I have to acknowledge your letter of the 19th inst. I am a little puzzled by your p.s. that the school matters at Alexandria are arranged without involving us, because a letter from Col. Lee of the 21st inst. asks us to provide $25 a month salary for two colored teachers whom he has engaged, and to whom you have undertaken to pay as much more. I believe we can readily do it, but I don't wish to interfere in any of your plans - Shall I say to Col. Lee that he may draw upon us for this amount
