and independent effort is likely to come to naught. The freedmen have gone to the utmost extent of their ability in providing the school-house and in paying a teacher and therefore I earnestly recommend that the amount above named (which I have estimated as sufficient) will be appropriated to finish up a place for a teacher at once.
